Monroe Street Bridge
Construction to replace the Monroe Street Bridge over the Northbound and Southbound I-90/94 (Kennedy Expressway) began winter 2018. The bridge opened in July of 2019.
The limits of work on Monroe Street extended from just east of Halsted Street to just west of Des Plaines Street. The proposed new bridge created additional space underneath the bridge along I-90/94 necessary for the future proposed I-90/94 mainline lanes, a Northbound I-90/94 Collector-Distributor (CD) road, and various entrance and exit ramps. A portion of the existing Southbound I-90/94 exit ramp to Monroe Street was also improved.
Monroe Street Bridge features include:
- Sidewalks on both sides of the street
- Two lanes in each direction
- Drainage and roadway lighting modifications
A retaining wall along the east side of the Kennedy Expressway just south of Monroe Street was constructed and the existing wall was removed, as well as improvements to existing sewer pipe lining that will extend the life of the sewers and reduce the chance of future leaks.
