Interchange Ramp Completion

The Interchange Ramp Completion contract involves four primary ramps of the Jane Byrne Interchange. These include:

      1. West-to-South Ramp (Opened December 15, 2020)
      2. West-to-North Ramp (Opened September 23, 2020)
      3. South-to-East Ramp (Opened December 15, 2020)
      4. Taylor Bypass & Taylor Street Exit Ramp (Opened December 15, 2020)

Construction for each of these ramps began 2019. The following is a description of the features of each ramp project:

 

    1. West-to-South Ramp

West-to-South Ramp features include:

      • Full pavement and bridge reconstruction
      • New 1,900’ long flyover structure with improved geometry
      • New retaining walls
      • Existing left-side merge with east-to-south ramp will be eliminated and improved with a longer merge distance

 

    1. West-to-North Ramp

West-to-North features include:

      • Full pavement and bridge reconstruction
      • New retaining walls
      • Ramp will enter northbound I-90/94 in a separate location than the east-to-north ramp, eliminating a conflict point and easing congestion
      • The proposed merge will be longer and safer
      • The exit from the westbound lanes will be from a separate lane, and not mixed with traffic exiting to the west-to-south movement

 

    1. South-to-East Ramp

South-to-East Ramp features include:

      • Full pavement and bridge reconstruction
      • New retaining walls
      • The proposed exit will start further to the north, resulting in less conflict from the southbound lanes

    1. Taylor Bypass & Taylor Street Exit Ramp

Taylor Bypass & Taylor Street Exit Ramp features include:

      • Full pavement and bridge reconstruction
      • New retaining walls
      • Reconfigured southbound I-90/94 exit location north of Van Buren Street, resulting in less decision points and conflict from the southbound lanes
      • New dedicated exit to Taylor Street from eastbound I-290
      • Elimination of the existing high volume east-to-south ramp routing below the Taylor Street exit ramp causing sight distance concerns
