Harrison Street & Halsted Street Bridges
Bridge reconstruction work began on the Harrison Street “West” Bridge and the Halsted Street “East” Bridge in March of 2014. Both bridges were completed in 2016.
The Halsted Street Bridge remained open to traffic with one lane of traffic in each direction during construction.
Sidewalks on the Halsted Street Bridge remained open to pedestrian traffic during construction. However, short term closures of the CTA station entrance were anticipated for pouring concrete for the bridge deck. As the CTA station entrance on the bridge is an ADA-compliant station, the CTA station entrance connection on the west side of Halsted Street was maintained. This was being accommodated through a temporary pedestrian bridge that provided pedestrian access from the east half of the bridge to the existing CTA station entrance on the west side of Halsted Street while the west half of the bridge was under construction.
The construction contract was awarded to Walsh Construction in December of 2013. The scope of work included the complete removal and replacement of the existing bridge structures on Harrison Street Bridge over Southbound i-90/94 (Dan Ryan Expressway) and the Halsted Street Bridge over I-290 (Eisenhower Expressway). The new bridge structures are longer and reconfigured to create space underneath to accommodate the I-290 and future I-90/94 improvements.
